Meekness not Weakness

Meekness not Weakness

Sunday 10am Vinyasa Zoom info below

It’s that time of year again! A time of birth and renewal signified by a number of high holy days in the worlds major religions. Having grown up Catholic (would never say I’m practicing but continue to celebrate the teachings as they’ve shaped who I am) this past decade or so I’ve made it a habit to reflect on the teachings of Jesus. Specifically those from the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew. Even more specific let us focus on one of the Beatitudes, one whose meaning always seemed to bewilder me, Beatitude #3.

“Blessed are the Meek, for they shall inherit the Earth”

In my naivetè I had always assumed the “Meek” where the poor and lowly. I’ve clearly misunderstood the word “meek”, as I have for far too long, and assumed it’s meaning leaned more towards a quality of submissiveness. Sure, this is part of it’s meaning but more importantly, those considered meek possess the qualities of humility, peacefulness, and gentleness. Why would the meek not inherit the Earth! These are some of the best virtues we could strive for, whether you’re a practicing Catholic or a practicing Yoga and everything in between!

In a world that too often celebrates the loudmouth and charlatan it is about time we celebrate the Meek. Who can you identify with these powerful virtues in your life? I use the word powerful because being meek takes great strength. To be Meek is to possess the qualities of forbearance, of restraint and patience. These traits perfectly align with the Yama and Niyama of the Yoga Sutra, Brahma Sutra and Hatha Yoga Pradipika.

In your life seek to be meek as it is not a sign of being weak.
