Focus on Indifference, Indifference for Focus

Indifference is a concept, practice and attitude that comes up quite a bit in everything from the Tao Te Ching to the Quran.

As a concept it is simple. If one can remain indifferent towards the malice brought on by others then the mind remains without agitation. Always easier said than done though! The practice of indifference requires being in an uncomfortable experience. (Check out my video to practice indifference, link in comments) One which often takes us by surprise and can rattle the emotions. So one way we can practice indifference is through recall. Learning to relive an uncomfortable past experience, even one that may have caused some trauma, can be incredibly therapeutic if we now look at it through the lens of indifference. Warning!!! Please, do not attempt to relive the most hurtful moments in your life at the start of this practice. Start small, grow confident in your ability to digest those hurtful moments then, slowly, turn the temperature up on this practice. I am not a therapist and for some it may be best to consult a professional.

There are two sides to the practice of indifference. One is that of increased contentment the other is lack of feeling. Be careful with this practice. Too much indifference and we lose our humanity. But if we can ride the line between indifference and feeling then we can find true emotional balance.

One of the great things about acquiring the attitude of indifference is an increased ability to remain focused on tasks and practices even if an external disruption occurs. Indifference gives us this unique super power to remain steadfast no matter the difficulties that may arise. In this way indifference is a key ingredient to improving perseverance.

Stay Indifferent and Carry On!!
