Spilling Over
It's quite simple, Anger towards another imposes Suffering upon the one who is Angry. For example, someone at work has a habit you consider annoying. Annoyance evolves into anger towards that person and the annoying habit goes unspoken leaving the angry person carrying the heavy burden of anger around with them. The one who is angry at another is now the one suffering while the person with the perceived annoying habit goes on about their day.
For the most part this is the extent of self-imposed suffering we're willing to endure but what happens when the anger boils over. In Yoga, as in Buddhist thought, the path of action is such: Thoughts, Words, Actions. We have a thought, if it's a positive one we hope to put those thoughts to words and actions. If the thought is negative it's desirable to diminish the effects of negative thoughts so they do not lead to negative action. We don't allow the annoying habit of another to cause us to act aggressively towards that person. It's what we like to call, "Being an adult". The variables that determine the course of one's actions are manifold and varied but one thing is sure, our emotions will drive actions towards the dominate emotion. We are sad or somber at a funeral but we would find it odd to see someone laughing at a funeral service unless it was common in a specific culture.
The emotion of Anger is sometimes referred to as a secondary emotion. Sadness, Pride or Fear can be the primary emotions that could then cause the secondary emotion of Anger. In Yoga, Vedanta and Samkhya philosophies we know that the actions of a person that are driven by negative emotions have an involutionary effect on that person, causing a cyclical effect that brings said person back into the primary emotions of Sadness, Pride and or Fear. So, let's turn our attention towards Ukraine and Putin, or as my 9 year old says Poopin. (You know we all think it!!)
Many heartfelt blessings to our Ukrainian brothers and sisters fighting for their freedom. Poopin, which is how we will refer to him henceforth, is nothing more than a scared, sad little man whose pride has exacted suffering and devastation on a peaceful nation of people. He joins a long list of fools who, unfortunate for us, find themselves with great power but have little understanding of their own suffering, how it can be the source of their actions and so little compassion for the suffering and death of not only the peoples he wishes to do harm but also upon his "own" people. Karma is weird like that. When one is suffering it can cause the suffering of entire nations.
Every little bit counts right now so if you can donate. United Nations Ukraine Humanitarian Fund link- https://crisisrelief.un.org/t/ukraine . There are crises in other nations including our own so be sure your tithing aligns with your passions.
